Suraj Case (Interim Report)

Funeral in Ghana

We would like to provide a progress report on the case of ABUBAKAR AWUDU SURAJ, a Ghanaian national who died on March 22, 2010 after being subdued by immigration officials during government deportation.

On June 28, three months after the incident, Suraj's wife, his legal team, and APFS, frustrated that the case had not yet been referred to the prosecutor's office, filed a complaint with the Chiba District Public Prosecutors Office. Two months have passed since then... already five months have passed since the incident, but the case has still not been referred to the prosecutor's office and the police investigation is still ongoing. The legal team is in regular contact with the Chiba District Public Prosecutors Office and the Chiba Prefectural Police, requesting that the case be referred to the prosecutor's office as soon as possible.

Suraj's wife, a family member, traveled to Ghana with his body on June 29th. In Ghana, she met his family for the first time and was able to attend his funeral and burial (photo shows the funeral).

The travel and accommodation expenses (386,000 yen) for his wife to Ghana are being covered by donations to the Suraj Fund (as of August 30, 2010, 335,000 yen had been raised). We will continue to use this fund to investigate the truth. We appreciate your support.
