Beyond borders,
APFS: Living Together
With foreign residents living in the local community
Japanese residents live together,
Aiming to realize a society where people help each other
We are engaged in activities.
Background of the establishment
Since the mid-1980s, many people from East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia have come to Japan for study or work. One Japanese person met several Bangladeshi people at a public bath and, as they became friends, learned that they were struggling with problems in their daily lives and discrimination. This prompted the founding of the ASIAN PEOPLE'S FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY (APFS) in 1987 as a mutual aid organization with the goal of "living together while helping each other."
Rather than Japanese people unilaterally helping "poor foreigners," we have aimed to build a society where people can live together by helping each other. To date, we have more than 3,800 members from 30 countries. In addition to Japan, members from four other countries, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Iran, and Burma, are on the board of directors and are actively involved in our activities. On July 14, 2010, we obtained corporate status (a specified non-profit corporation). We will continue to work hard to develop our organization further while inheriting our philosophy.
Main Activities
1. Consultation activities for foreign residents (solution-oriented consultation)
We accept consultations from foreign residents regarding 1) visas (resident status) and 2) daily life (marriage/divorce, education, medical care, taxes, etc.) We aim to provide "solution-oriented consultation" that aims to solve problems together with the person seeking advice, rather than just providing information.

2. Advocacy activities, research and study activities
(1) Advocacy activities
We regularly make recommendations regarding the protection of basic human rights of foreign residents to relevant ministries and agencies, members of the Diet, etc.
(2) Survey and research activities
We have conducted research and studies on issues facing undocumented foreign residents, the living conditions of foreigners in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo, the current status of support groups for foreigners overseas, etc. The results of our research have been compiled into books and pamphlets.
Read more about the book here.
In addition, we hold regular symposiums with the aim of publicizing the results of these surveys and research to society at large.

3. Activities for multicultural coexistence
We promote understanding of multicultural coexistence through lectures at universities, outreach classes at high schools, and introductions to our activities at the APFS office.
Achievements: Ochanomizu University, Sophia University, Rikkyo University, and many others

4. Holding meetings, lectures, etc.
We are cultivating human resources who can contribute to multicultural coexistence through courses such as the "Counselor Training Course" and the "Foreign Community Leader Training Course."
