"I believe that even as a foreigner in Japan, I have the right to show my filial piety to my parents."
- 16-year-old girl, second-year high school student, Iranian nationality
"My parents have spent more than half their lives in Japan. They can't make a living in the Philippines. I want to live in Japan as a family."
- 19-year-old male, second-year student at a vocational school, Filipino nationality
This message was delivered with great enthusiasm by two children who are irregular residents in Japan at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan. Both children have been approached by the Ministry of Justice to be allowed to stay on the condition that their parents return to Japan. Despite the difficult circumstances of irregular residence, they have lived in Japan with their parents until today. Last year, APFS worked on "100 Days of Action to Nurture Children's Dreams." The irregularly residing children began to seriously think about their futures and take action to pave the next step.
The Iranian girl is aiming to go to university, and the Filipino boy is aiming to find work as a care worker. However, if they remain in the country illegally, and are in a situation where they may be separated from their parents, it will be difficult to take the next step.
From July to December, APFS will be taking new steps to protect the right of families to live together. In addition to supporting the Japanese economy, we will work with local communities to raise awareness of the existence of parents who have raised their children.
Supporting undocumented immigrants is difficult to gain immediate understanding of, and funding is currently insufficient. Your warm and encouraging support will enable us to take action dynamically.
We appreciate your support and cooperation.
