"I believe that even as a foreigner, I have the right to show filial piety to my parents in Japan."
- 16-year-old girl, second-year high school student, Iranian nationality
"My parents have spent more than half their lives in Japan. We can't make a living in the Philippines. We want to live in Japan as a family."
- 19-year-old male, second-year student at a vocational school, Filipino nationality
This message was delivered by two children who are undocumented immigrants in Japan, who made a great effort to deliver it at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan. Both children have been approached by the Ministry of Justice with an offer to be granted residency on the condition that their parents return to their home countries. They have lived in Japan with their parents until today, despite the difficult circumstances of being undocumented immigrants. Last year, APFS undertook the "100-Day Action to Nurture Children's Dreams." Children who are undocumented immigrants have begun to seriously consider their own future and take action to forge their next steps.
An Iranian woman aims to attend university, and a Filipino man aims to work as a caregiver. However, remaining in their undocumented residency status, and potentially being separated from their parents, makes taking the next step difficult.
APFS will launch new actions between July and December to protect the right of families to live together. While supporting the Japanese economy, we will also work with local communities to raise awareness among society about the importance of parents who have raised children.
Supporting undocumented immigrants is not something that is easily understood, and currently, we lack sufficient funds to provide such support. Your warm and encouraging support would allow us to take action more dynamically.
We would greatly appreciate your support and cooperation.
