We held an Asian cooking class.

Foreigners try their hand at Japanese cuisine

APFS held an "Asian Cooking Class" from June to November 2009.

In the Filipino cooking class, participants learned to make caldereta (Filipino beef stew) and banana spring rolls; in the Myanmar cooking class, they learned to make Myanmar dipping noodles and coconut jelly; and in the Bangladesh cooking class, they learned to make mackerel curry and misti (dessert). Instructors from each country taught their home-style dishes to the Japanese participants. Cultural introductions were also included alongside the cooking, making for a fulfilling experience. In the Japanese cooking class for foreigners, participants made miso soup using dashi broth made from shiitake mushrooms and kelp, and cooked rice in an earthenware pot. It was a very enjoyable opportunity to catch a glimpse of each country's culture through food.
