Exchange of opinions for those working to assist foreigners
—How to achieve sustainable counseling activities while effectively managing stress—
APFS is an NPO that has been providing consultations to foreigners for 25 years. Through our experience in providing consultations to foreigners, we have come to realize that counselors are prone to experiencing stress due to cultural differences between themselves and the clients, and the difficulty in gaining understanding of the significance and expertise of their work.
For counselors engaged in providing support to foreigners, maintaining good physical and mental health and a high level of motivation for their work is essential for the sustainability of activities that support foreign residents. To that end, I believe it would be effective for foreigner counselors who share experiences to share wisdom on how to confront and resolve stress.
Based on these considerations, we have organized an exchange meeting where counselors who are engaged in providing support to foreigners can gather to exchange opinions on the stresses that arise when providing support to foreigners, points to keep in mind when providing support while dealing with cultural differences between counselors and clients, and methods for relieving stress.
At the exchange of opinions session, we will welcome Ms. Akiko Onishi, a clinical psychology specialist who works daily with international student counseling at the University of Tokyo, as the facilitator. We will reflect on and organize our experiences in daily counseling activities, and also consider daily self-care that can be done to continue participating in activities in a healthier and more fulfilling way. In addition, we will report on the results of the survey conducted by APFS targeting counselors in Tokyo. We encourage everyone to participate.
