On Monday, May 21, 2012, at 4:00 PM, the fourth hearing in the national compensation lawsuit in the Suraj case was held in courtroom 705 of the Tokyo District Court.
The courtroom was once again full, demonstrating the continued high level of public interest in this case.
The government failed to submit the rebuttal documents by the May 14th deadline and asked for an extension until June 20th. The presiding judge also stated that the case must proceed regardless of the progress of the criminal proceedings, given the government's dishonest response. The government clearly stated that it would present its counterarguments by the next hearing. It seems that the focus will finally be determined and the case will move forward at the next hearing.
Today, after the trial, we moved to the bar association building, where the defense lawyers spoke to us about the progress of the national compensation lawsuit so far and its future direction (the photo shows the presentation). Many questions were raised by the participants, and we were able to share once again the cruelty and irrationality of this case.
The next hearing will be held on Monday, July 30, 2012, at 11:30 AM in Courtroom 705 of the Tokyo District Court.
We would greatly appreciate your cooperation in observing the proceedings.
