8th date of state compensation lawsuit in Suraj case
Date and time: February 25, 2013 (Monday) 16:00~
Venue: Tokyo District Court, Courtroom 705

On March 22, 2010, a Ghanaian man, ABUBAKAR AWUDU SURAJ (hereinafter referred to as Suraj), died during a government-sponsored deportation. The death occurred when immigration officials accompanying him on the deportation forcefully restrained him using foot cuffs, towels, and personal cable ties, which are not permitted by the regulations.
In order to find out the truth behind Suraj's death, we filed a lawsuit against the government and immigration officials on August 5, 2010, seeking damages. Suraj regretted having overstayed his visa and all he wanted was to live in Japan with his wife. Through this lawsuit, we will find out why such a man had to die.
At the next hearing, the government is scheduled to make its formal argument following the decision not to prosecute in July. One year and four months after the lawsuit was filed, the case is finally moving forward.
Having more people attend the trial will be a great help in uncovering the truth of this incident.
Thank you for your cooperation in attending the hearing. (After the hearing, there will be a brief explanation of the trial details.)
