We held a meeting for undocumented immigrants.

Meeting

On Sunday, January 22, 2017, we held a "Meeting for Illegal Residents." More than 30 illegal residents and their supporters gathered, exceeding our expectations, and we discussed the current situation regarding special permission to stay in Japan and future activity plans.
Sharing anxieties and goals with fellow members in similar circumstances, we reaffirmed our determination to fight together. Finally, we united our resolve for the "Migrant Workers' May Day" to be held at APFS on April 30th (Sunday) and held a get-together.

Currently, it remains difficult to obtain special permission to stay for undocumented immigrants. Therefore, APFS, together with experts, has held a "Citizens' Roundtable on Special Permission to Stay" to discuss future activity policies.link). This time, we also reported on the results of that discussion.
A child who normally never speaks in front of others, with a trembling voice, expressed their feelings, saying, "I think it's strange that even human rights aren't recognized." Members who had previously received special permission to reside in Japan and are now living legally offered words of support. It became a space for those directly affected and those supporting them to share their struggles and hopes.

There was also a moment when APFS, as a support organization, explained to the individuals involved how they wanted them to approach their problems. In particular, the words of an APFS board member, "If you don't have a strong will, then go home," made the individuals reaffirm their resolve, which was very memorable.

During the social gathering held after the meeting, the tension that had been building up until then eased, and everyone freely shared their thoughts and feelings.
On Sunday, April 30th, we will hold a "May Day for Migrant Workers." We will also discuss the challenges faced by undocumented immigrants.
We hope to further enhance our activities together with all of you, so we would appreciate your continued interest.
