On March 22, 2010, a Ghanaian man, Abubakar Audu Suraj, died during deportation. It has been almost three years since this was the first case of a death during deportation in Japan.
Suraj's family and supporters believe that Suraj's death was caused by excessive restraint by the immigration officials who accompanied him on his deportation. In response, the Ministry of Justice and the government, which have jurisdiction over the Chiba District Public Prosecutors Office and the Immigration Bureau, stated that Suraj's death was due to his heart disease (more than two years after the incident, they examined his heart, which had been kept in storage, and claimed that he had a pre-existing heart disease). In order to determine the truth of this incident, which is full of doubts about whether he really had a heart disease and whether that disease was the cause of his death, we are currently filing a lawsuit seeking state compensation against the Ministry of Justice and the government.
At this briefing session, we will have the lawyers talk about the events that have taken place since the incident occurred, what has been discovered, and how the situation will progress in the future, while examining the issues surrounding this case. We also hope to hear from his family and friends who were close to him while he was alive, so that everyone can learn about his character.
Death during deportation should never happen. In order to ensure that Suraj's death was not in vain, we would like to share the issue of this incident with as many people as possible. We look forward to your participation.
