On March 22, 2010, Abu Bakar Audou Suraj, a Ghanaian national, died while being deported. Three years have passed since this incident, the first of its kind to occur in Japan, where a person died during deportation.
Supporters, including the family, believe that Suraj's death was caused by excessive restraint from immigration officials accompanying him during his deportation. In response, the Chiba District Public Prosecutors Office and the Ministry of Justice, which has jurisdiction over the Immigration Bureau, claimed that the cause of Suraj's death was his heart condition (more than two years after the incident, they examined his heart, which they claimed had been kept in storage, and asserted that he had a pre-existing heart condition). To uncover the truth of this case, which is riddled with doubts as to whether he truly had a heart condition and whether that condition was the cause of his death, a lawsuit seeking state compensation is currently being filed against the Ministry of Justice and the government.
At this debriefing session, we will examine the issues surrounding this case, with presentations from the defense team on the events since the incident, what has been revealed so far, and how the case may progress in the future. We will also hear from his family and friends who were close to him during his lifetime, so that everyone can learn about his character.
Death during repatriation is something that should never happen. In order to ensure that Suraj's death is not in vain, we would like to share the seriousness of this case with as many people as possible. We look forward to your participation.
