The 4th counselor training course "Medical care for irregular immigrants and refugee applicants" was held

Scenes from the lecture

On October 22, 2023, the 4th counselor training course "Medical Care for Irregular Immigrants and Refugee Applicants" was held at the APFS office. The lecturer was Dr. Junpei Yamamura of Minatomachi Clinic.
First, the trends in illnesses that immigrants and refugees need to be careful of were explained. It was also mentioned that in the case of people in detention, there are also injuries caused by violence by immigration officials. Lack of Japanese language skills and information, and high medical costs were mentioned as obstacles to treatment and prevention for immigrants and refugees, but above all, it was said that there are systemic factors such as exclusion from health insurance and medical welfare systems, and the strictness of refugee recognition. Medical welfare systems that can be used even by irregular immigrants and refugee applicants were also introduced, but many differ depending on the municipality, and it was said that it is best to consult with a supporter. During the question and answer session, participants asked practical questions from their own experiences, which was very educational for us. It was also very interesting to hear about the beliefs that are rooted in Professor Yamamura's past activities. *This course is conducted with the support of the Pal System Tokyo Citizens' Activities Grant Fund.

* Dr. Yamamura's book "Immigration Dissection New Book" describes the harsh truths of detention facilities and is a book filled with his activities to date. It also touches on the case of Suraj, who was supported by our organization 13 years ago. http://www.genjin.jp/book/b622920.html
