As previously announced on this website, on July 3, 2012, the immigration officials who were referred to prosecutors in December 2010 in connection with Mr. Suraj's government-sponsored deportation were not indicted.
Today we held a "one-day protest action" to protest against this unjust decision not to prosecute.
The fifth hearing of the state compensation lawsuit was held at 11:30 a.m. in Courtroom 705 of the Tokyo District Court, and the gallery was filled to capacity again. At this hearing, because a decision was made not to prosecute during the hearing, the only thing that was confirmed was that the records held by the Chiba District Public Prosecutors Office would be newly reviewed and examined.
At 12 o'clock, the venue shifted to the Bar Association Hall, where the defense team explained the reasons for the Chiba District Public Prosecutors Office's decision not to prosecute (the results of the re-examination showed that Suraj had a heart condition, which was the cause of his death, etc.). It was also announced that the future direction will involve a detailed review of newly issued appraisal reports after the criminal punishment, and that a prosecutorial review committee is also in the cards.
From 3pm, we held a protest in front of the Chiba District Public Prosecutors Office. We submitted the protest letter, which I have previously posted on this blog, to the Chiba District Public Prosecutors Office. The prosecutor in charge was not present, but Suraj's wife handed it directly to the administrative officer. Although criminal punishment has already been imposed, the Chiba District Public Prosecutors Office's unusual decision not to indict on the grounds that there was no suspicion makes us feel that they are protecting their own family. We must firmly protest against such an unjust decision.
Thank you very much to everyone who participated in the one-day action, even in the heat. Thank you to everyone who attended the state compensation hearings as well.
The next hearing, the sixth, will be held on Monday, October 1, 2012, from 3:30 p.m. in Courtroom 705 of the Tokyo District Court. Let's continue to fill the gallery and appeal to the presiding judge about the importance of this case. Thank you for your cooperation.
