On March 22, 2010, Abubakar Audou Suraj, a 45-year-old Ghanaian, died while being deported at government expense. The truth behind this tragic incident remains unclear, and his family continues to live each day in grief and anger.

In the midst of her hectic daily life, there are moments when his wife finds solace and a smile involuntarily. These moments occur when she looks at the many illustrations her husband, Suraj, left behind. He drew many illustrations during his lifetime, and his works were used as illustrations for magazines and on CD covers, among other things.

This autumn, the first hearing of the state compensation lawsuit concerning the death of Suraj was held. We hope that many more people will learn about Suraj and the case. With that in mind, we held a two-day Little Africa Day, featuring illustrations that evoke Suraj's personality. We also prepared African cuisine prepared by Suraj's wife.

On that day, friends who had been close to Suraj, people interested in the case, and lawyers from the defense team who are assisting in the trial had a wonderful opportunity to reflect on Suraj's character while looking at the illustrations. A foreigner who had been detained at the same time as Suraj also came to show his support, and there was a moment when he spoke with his wife about what Suraj was like at the time.

While we will certainly work towards uncovering the truth of the incident, we also want to continue creating opportunities for many people to learn about who Suraj was and understand that he genuinely wished to live in Japan with his wife.
