On October 22, 2023, the APFS office held its 4th counselor training seminar, "Medical Care for Irregular Immigrants and Asylum Seekers." Dr. Junpei Yamamura of Minatomachi Clinic served as the lecturer.
First, the lecture explained the types of illnesses that immigrants and refugees are particularly susceptible to. For those in detention, it was noted that they may also suffer injuries from assaults by immigration officers. While a lack of Japanese language and information, and high medical costs were cited as obstacles to treatment and prevention for immigrants and refugees, it was emphasized that systemic factors, such as exclusion from health insurance and medical welfare systems, and the strictness of refugee status determination, are paramount. Medical and welfare systems available to irregular immigrants and asylum seekers were also introduced, but it was noted that these vary by municipality, and it is advisable to consult with support staff. During the Q&A session, participants asked practical questions based on their own experiences, which was very informative for us as well. It was a fascinating session, and we also learned about Professor Yamamura's beliefs rooted in his past activities. *This lecture was made possible with the support of the "Pal System Tokyo Citizen Activity Grant Fund."
*Dr. Yamamura's book, "The New Book of Immigration Deconstruction," details the harsh realities of detention facilities and is a compilation of Dr. Yamamura's activities to date. It also touches upon the case of Suraj, whom our organization supported 13 years ago. http://www.genjin.jp/book/b622920.html
