The 18th Annual APFS★May Day Gathering for Migrant Workers was held at the Itabashi Ward Green Hall on Sunday, April 30, 2017.
First, APFS Vice-Representative Director Yoshida introduced the new organization, followed by APFS Advisor Yoshinari, who in his keynote speech strongly asserted that "the working conditions of migrant workers have not changed at all in the last 30 years." Following this, the rally resolution was adopted in both Japanese and English.
We also had speeches from guests, including Professor Tetsuo Mizukami of Rikkyo University, Burmese human rights activist Kyaw Kyaw Soe, Professor Ichiro Watanabe of Meisei University, Professor Yoshiaki Noro of Rikkyo University, and Atsuko Inoue, a council member of Itabashi Ward. All of them mentioned the current harsh legal situation faced by foreign residents, and offered warm words of encouragement and the importance of migrant workers taking the initiative to work towards improving the situation.
During the second half of the event, delicious Bangladeshi food was served at the social gathering, and there was also a wonderful performance by the Bangladeshi music group Uttrong, bringing the meeting to a successful close.
As this was the first meeting in about 10 years since the last one in 2006, many members who have been with APFS since its establishment participated, and the meeting was attended by about 100 people including related parties. New and old members actively exchanged opinions with each other. We hope to continue to actively create networks between members like this in the future.
