On Friday, March 28, 2014, Suraj's wife and APFS staff submitted 1,354 signatures for the "Don't Appeal" campaign in the Suraj case state compensation lawsuit to the Ministry of Justice.
Initially, we planned to negotiate with the Ministry of Justice and submit our signatures along with our request, but the Ministry of Justice, citing the ongoing litigation as an excuse, remained adamant that they could not respond if the parties involved (including Suraj's family and support groups) showed up.
We only submitted the petition and petition to the Ministry of Justice in its lobby. We protested that it was too harsh to only respond to the family members in the lobby, even if the case was still in litigation. We also strongly requested that the Minister of Justice be informed that the petition had been submitted.
The request letter submitted jointly by Suraj's wife and APFS contained the following three points:
1) Demand a formal apology from the bereaved family;
② Accept the judicial decision and do not appeal
3) Suspend government-sponsored repatriation of those who are evading deportation until the situation improves.
Thank you very much to everyone who participated in this signature campaign. Many of you worked at the grassroots level to gather signatures in a short period of time. We strongly hope that through these signatures, the Ministry of Justice will accept the judicial decision and not appeal.
Also on the same day, the Democratic Party's League of Parliamentarians for Multicultural Coexistence, which has long been interested in this case, made a request to the Ministry of Justice not to appeal Suraj's lawsuit against the state for damages.
I heard that Representative Masaharu Nakagawa, Representative Michihiro Ishibashi, Representative Mieko Kamimoto, and Representative Eri Tokunaga attended today's request. This will also be a great help in preventing the appeal.
APFS will continue to work towards resolving Suraj's case. We appreciate your support and cooperation.
