On Wednesday, November 18, 2015, at 10:00 AM, the appeal trial of the national compensation claim lawsuit in the Suraj case concluded in courtroom 825 of the Tokyo High Court.
On behalf of the plaintiffs' legal team, attorney Koichi Kodama made the final appeal, and on behalf of the plaintiffs, Mrs. Suraj made the final appeal.
Attorney Kodama said:
Finally, I want to confirm the essential point. Suraj was not treated as a human being with dignity. Looking at the video of Suraj's deportation and the reenactment photos of the immigration office that have been released as evidence, it is clear that immigration officials treated Suraj terribly. Yet, not a single person has been punished. Can such injustice be allowed to stand? I hope that the High Court will also deliver a verdict that brings justice to the case, he said.
Mrs. Suraj began her statement with a trembling voice, saying, "Please give my husband back," and then demanding that if he cannot be returned, the Ministry of Justice issue a formal apology and express remorse. She said she still suffers every day. She wants to know the truth about her husband's death. With a voice choked with emotion, she said that she wants a sincere investigation into what immigration officials should have done at the time of the incident and what the Ministry of Justice should do in the future, and that both immigration officials and the Ministry of Justice should change.
The defendants did not raise any further objections, and the trial has now concluded.
The next meeting will be the date of the judgment.January 18, 2016, 15:00 - Tokyo High Court, Case No. 825It's the court.
It has been over four years since we filed the lawsuit for state compensation on August 5, 2011. During this time, Mrs. Suraj has endured immense hardship in her court appearances. The lawyers on the legal team have also represented us pro bono. And thanks to the cooperation of many observers and supporters, we have come this far. We urge you to come and hear the verdict for yourselves on the day of the judgment. We would be grateful if you could attend the hearing.
