Supreme Court Judgement on the Abubakar Awudu Suraj Case

On 9th November 2016 the Supreme Court announced its judgement on the lawsuit brought by the family of Abubakar Awudu Suraj who died during being forcibly deported from Japan. The result was that the case was ruled against the plaintiff (Suraj’s wife and family). Although in the Tokyo district court it had been found that the immigration office was guilty of criminal offence in their handling of Suraj, this was overturned in the high court and the appeal to the supreme court was rejected.

We have worked hard together with Suraj’s wife, lawyers and supporters to gain recognition of the immigration bureau’s offence, but as the government were able to submit many reports from government supporting experts, the result took this most disappointing turn of events.

We welcome you to read a message from Suraj’s wife and a report from the representing lawyers which has been published on the APFS blog.
